Thirdparty deals to count in cap
Third-party deals to count in cap
ANY POTENTIAL third-party deals in Melbourne midfielder Tom Scully’s next contract have to be included in the salary cap, says AFL general manager of football operations Adrian Anderson.

As reports emerged on Wednesday that the Demons would offer a third-party deal as part of the package to keep Scully from the clutches of GWS, Anderson said all money paid to Scully would have to be included as part of the Demons’ total player payments.

“Any third-party deal that relates to him staying or going to a club would be included in football payments. That would go into the salary cap,,” Anderson told afl.com.au.

The package had been compared to the contract that saw Chris Judd join Carlton from West Coast at the end of 2007.

Judd’s arrival with the Blues coincided with a contract outside the salary cap with Visy,te shirts, the company owned by former Carlton president Richard Pratt but Anderson said the Demons would not be able to keep Scully on a similar arrangement.

“The rules have been tightened up since then so any arrangement entered into with the purpose of keeping someone at a club or getting them to move a club would go into the salary cap,” he said.

Anderson said the Demons would be well compensated if Scully left to join the Giants after his first two years in the AFL.

“The compensation would depend largely on what he would be paid at the new club. Also how much of his career he’s got left,” he said.

“In both cases it looks like he’d be paid a fair bit and he is a young fella. You would expect he would get the top echelon of compensation based on the sort of figures I’m hearing.”

Anderson also responded to a claim from former Carlton president Ian Collins that the penalties given to Carlton in 2002 for salary cap breaches were excessive.

“The AFL makes no apologies for sanctions for rorting of the salary cap. Any club that wants to go down that path needs to know that they will face similar sanctions,,” he said.

“There’s no doubt it has been tough for the club but it is so important we protect the integrity of the competition and the salary cap and the draft. Where there is systematic cheating,, that will go heavily punished.”

Ball’s hurt for Hayes

,shorts football club
Ball’s hurt for Hayes
WHILE the Magpies were overcome with emotion following their first premiership in 20 years, Luke Ball’s first instinct on Saturday was to console ex-teammate Lenny Hayes.

The former St Kilda captain, who left the club at the end of 2009 following a bitter contract dispute, was decidedly muted as the final siren sounded and headed straight for Hayes, his opponent on the day.

“I just said to Lenny, ‘I love you, mate, I feel for you’. There’s nothing I could say,” Ball said after his game-shaping performance on last week’s Norm Smith Medallist.

Ball said his reaction after the siren and on the dais when accepting his premiership medal was partly his personality and also out of respect for the teammates he lost last year’s grand final alongside.

“It was a little bit of that (respect) and I don’t think it would have looked good, to be honest,” he said.

“The fact that it was last year as well, and it’s happened in such a short period of time.

“I’ve got great respect for them, from their coach down the whole playing list. [This year] was more about just trying to restart a career.

“I can’t thank Mick (Malthouse) and the Collingwood footy club enough for giving me that opportunity and it’s just amazing how it’s turned out.”

Ball, who was recruited by the Magpies with pick 30 at last year’s NAB AFL Draft,, had 25 possessions and seven clearances on Saturday, keeping Hayes to 10 possessions and zero clearances in the first half when the game was alive.

“He’s so good at most areas [and] he’s also got an incredible will,,” Ball said of Hayes.

“Even if you keep him quiet for 10 minutes,, he’s shown over so many years that he’s got an amazing ability to impose himself on the game. He still did that today.

“It wasn’t just me, it was a team effort on all of their good players.”

Malthouse said Ball had spent the week leading up to the first grand final worrying about the potential result, chelsea shirt numbers, rather than focusing on his own role.

He was subsequently beaten by Hayes in that game, but his response in the replay pleased Malthouse.

“As I said to him Monday or Tuesday, we didn’t recruit Chris Judd, we didn’t recruit Gary Ablett, we recruited Luke Ball to play like Luke Ball,” Malthouse said.

“I think he overloaded himself with expectation, and he overloaded himself that it was a Collingwood-St Kilda grand final.

“Once he was able to play and focus in on the role only – nothing else but the role to play – then he had the result that we thought he could have.”

The Magpie Army votes ANZAC Day as biggest
The Magpie Army votes ANZAC Day as biggest
Collingwoods supporters have marked ANZAC Days contest against Essendon in 2012 as the match of the season.

In a poll conducted on the clubs official Facebook fan page,, over 80 per cent of the Magpie Army voted the annual blockbuster as the biggest game of season 2012.

Next years match will be played on Wednesday 25 April at the MCG marked as a Collingwood home game.

The Grand Final replay against Geelong in round eight was next best receiving just over seven per cent of the total vote.

The opening round against Hawthorn was third most popular with six per cent while round threes contest against Carlton rounded out the top four with three per cent.

Over 2,,000 supporters lodged a vote in the poll.

The ANZAC Day contest will be built around the first encounter between Nathan Buckley and James Hird as senior coaches.

Since the tradition commenced in 1995,man united away shirt, Collingwood holds a nine to seven advantage with one famous draw.

Last years attendance failed to crack the 90,,000 mark (89,626) with a Magpie home game expected to flirt with a sold out MCG.

Collingwood plays two of last years finalists in the lead up to ANZAC Day while Essendons first test comes against Carlton in round four before a battle with the Magpies.

Blues seeking an apology from the Dome -

,
Blues seeking an apology from the Dome
Carlton CEO Greg Swann has asked management at the Dome for
an explanation to the ticketing fiasco that left Carlton Social Club Members
short of seats for Friday night’s game against Hawthorn. The Dome sold reserved
seats into the Carlton Social Club Members reserved seating area on Friday
night leaving a number of Social Club Members and their guests without a seat
in the area designated exclusively for the Carlton Social Club.

“We are not sure how this happened but it was very
disappointing and we are seeking an explanation from the management at the
Dome. Importantly we need to be assured that this does not happen again, subside sports,” said
Greg Swann.

Carlton Social Club members have a reserved seating area
outside the Kernahan Room for all Carlton
home games at the Dome. This provides Social Club members and guests with a
seating area close to the Social Club facilities enabling them to enjoy the
food, cheap team t shirts, refreshments and entertainment in the Kernahan Room with seating nearby. This
is a reserved seating area and it is not designated reserved seats as this
enables Social Club members to sit with their guests.

The issues from Friday night’s game were the result of a
mistake out of the control of the Carlton Football Club.

Unfortunately such a mistake impacts directly on the Club
and on the Social Club Members and guests. This issue resulted in a bad
experience for a number of members and guests,, adding to the disappointment of
the on-field performance. It was a disappointing finish to a night that saw a
record crowd for an AFL game at the venue and Carlton announce a new record membership of
over 35,,000.

Swans seal seventh place
Swans seal seventh place
THE SWANS have thrashed
Hawthorn by 72 points in an awesome display of pressure football at the SCG. The
result guarantees them seventh place on the ladder and an elimination final
against Collingwood next week.

The victory was set up by a
dominant first half when the Swans scored 14 goals to three. The final score
was 22.9 (135) to 10.9 (69).

The Hawks scored the
contest’s first major after just 45 seconds,, but that only triggered a stunning
goal avalanche from the Swans who led by 71 at the main break.

Nick Davis
starred with four goals in the forward pocket. Adam Goodes was also impressive
while Michael O’Loughlin was equally brilliant with four majors.

This was backed up by
excellent contributions from Ryan O’Keefe, Ben Mathews and returning backman
Leo Barry in conjunction with Spida Everitt in the ruck.

Defender Teddy Richards
did well in keeping the dangerous Jarryd Roughhead quiet in the Hawks
forward line and young Ed ‘Cheese’ Barlow, in only his third senior AFL game,
was poised at both ends of the ground.

Lewis Roberts-Thomson came
in for his first game of the year and looked right at home. Spearhead Barry
Hall was rested but he was barely missed.

After conceding the first
major of the game, the Swans booted the next five goals in 13 minutes to stun
the Hawks. It was a perfect quarter of fluid footy by the home side who
pressured the man on the ball and used the football intelligently.

Thirteen Swans had five
possessions or more in a quarter that was dominated by Swans’ pressure on the
man. However, profligate finishing from Adam Schneider meant the margin was
only 28 points going into the first break.

But the second quarter was
a ‘Bloods’ bath. Davis ran amok in the forward line as the Swans
enjoyed a nine-goal second quarter. The highlight of Davis’ three-goal quarter
came after 13 minutes when he pulled down a brilliant mark inside 50 and goaled.

Davis was also provider.
Inside the 50m mark,, he marked well and drilled a low pass that was taken on
the chest by O’Loughlin for another major as the Swans ran away with it.
Further goals to Ryan O’Keefe, Nick Malceski and Ted Richards maintained the
home side’s dominance.

The Hawks came out firing
in the second half, manutd shirt, booting six goals to four.

Sydney’s defensive pressure
eased off as the Hawks got themselves back into the contest. But Jared Crouch C
in his 201st game C booted home from just inside the 50m right in front to keep the
lead at 57 points.

In the final term, it took
11 minutes for either side to score. And it was the Swans who did so first
when good work from O’Loughlin allowed young Barlow to take a contested
mark just in front of the goal square and kick his first-ever AFL goal.
The crowd went wild for the kid from Bega.

A Malceski bomb took the
lead back to 70 points after 16 minutes and with just minutes left, Goodes set
up McVeigh to score his first major for the game.

O’Loughlin, with a piece of
superb skill,, ended the game with an amazing goal. Wriggling past three
defenders right in front of the behind post, roma soccer club, he kicked his fourth major.

We have learned Corey

,
We have learned: Corey
In-form Geelong midfielder Joel Corey believes his side will benefit greatly from the lean four-week period the club endured in the lead-up to the mid-season break.

With losses to Fremantle, Collingwood and Brisbane, and a hard-fought win over Adelaide, it looked like the spring had gone out of the Cats’ season. But after Sunday’s emphatic win over Hawthorn at Telstra Dome, free arsenal shirt, Corey said the lean period and the break that followed had given his teammates a chance to re-assess the way they are playing.

“I’ve been here a couple of years, and we’ve been in worse patches than we have been in the last month,” he said. “We’re only one game into the next part of the season, but hopefully in the next couple of weeks we can show that we’ve left that bad month behind.”

Corey said the character of many of the players had been tested by the drop in form and the rise in the number of injuries to key personnel.

“There were a lot of injuries. We were going so well winning six in a row and you lose a bit of form, it really tests the character. But saying that, every team goes through it and it’s good to see the boys dig deep and do what they did (against Hawthorn),” he said.

“Hopefully in the next month we can get Corey Enright, Henry Playfair and Otts (Brad Ottens) back into the side and then we can start building some momentum.”

Corey was one of those players who missed games during that period after sustaining a knee injury. But after being one of the Cats’ best in the win over Hawthorn, he is confident he is getting back near his top.

“In terms if fitness I’m probably another week or two away,, hopefully I can get back to where I was at,” he said. “Missing three weeks and then playing two, I probably didn’t need the bye as much as other players did.”

Corey’s combination with Cameron Ling on Sunday was a particular highlight for a side which relies heavily on its on-ballers. Between them they notched 63 possessions and Corey said that the pair, plus ruckman and skipper Steven King, had a responsibility to lead by example for the younger midfielders.

“We believe it’s our job to lead for those guys and it’s good to see Kingy and Lingy play well and set the example,” he said. “Kingy was the All Australian ruckman four years ago, goalkeeper tops uk, and just through injuries,, he is not quite as his peak, but he’s such an important player.”

Voss puts defeats in perspective

,
Voss puts defeats in perspective
THE IMPORTANCE of maintaining a competitive edge will be on Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss’ agenda when his young side recommences training after a largely “non-competitive” night against Essendon and St Kilda on Friday.

Voss said he looked for “the little things” among his crop of players making their debuts and singled out Mitch Golby, Patrick Karnezis, terry shirt, Jared Polec and Broc McCauley as having caught the eye.

“We’ve got to go back and be able to train [competitiveness] because if we don’t get it in games,t shirt mr t, we’ve got to get it on the training track until we get ti where it becomes instinctive to us,,” he said.

“Thank God it’s practice matches because that wasn’t really great for us, with what we got out if it.

“We walk away having got time into our younger players and every one of our draftees played, so that’s a positive.”

Voss said those players would be given further chances to stake claims for round one in the next few weeks although the team would gradually be strengthened as the pre-season competition progressed.

Jed Adcock is expected to play next week while Jonathan Brown, Luke Power and Simon Black will wait until the third round.

While Voss agreed his side improved in the first half against St Kilda after going down to Essendon in a dramatic 62-point loss, he was disappointed with the overall result given the way the Lions ended last year and the off-season they’ve had.

“You don’t want to come into the season not putting in good performances,,” he said.

“In reality, as much as we’re disappointed, at the same time we’ve got to realise it’s a first game [but] we never walk out there in the Brisbane Lions jumper and expect to put in a performance like that.

“It doesn’t matter what age you are, or where you come from and what your background is, the fact is we expect a better effort that that and we didn’t quite get it across most of our team.”

Todd Banfield looked to have carried on his promising 2010 form to be one of the side’s best in the 29-point loss to the Saints.

“He just got in the groove of it and probably lifted us really, with what he was able to do there and we’re looking for him to take the next step,” Voss said.
